Quarantine

After having a “blog” for a couple of years, I think I have finally learned how to use it…Hurrah! It’s a great time for writing and thinking, and thinking about writing, because the Earth is in the middle of the 2020 Covid quarantine.

As an artist, my life has been about people, and being close to people, and wanting to get as many people in a room as I can, so for me and my fellow performance artists it is a challenge. From teaching classes, to company rehearsals, to performing, it is not a solitary act. We are social beings. Fortunately, we are used to NOT always having things handed to us. Trying to figure out how to do what we need to do, despite great odds, is second nature to us!

I feel honored to be part of the global dance community. I see the thousands of online classes being taught, and creative ways to be in the same room, but not. We are not content to sit and wait for someone to tell us it is ok to continue our life. Most of us have never asked for permission anyway. I am proud of us. I watch the amazing posts on social media of dancers dancing in living rooms, apartment roofs, and backyards and see the strength and devotion to our art form.

We still have a long way to go, but I have faith in us. We will find new ways to achieve our goals and as life goes back to normal (someday), we will find we have learned so much, and grown as artists and humans.
